Energy Institute EI 3583 medical was introduced in 2025 for wind turbine workers. It is becoming chosen over the old RUK (RenewableUK) medical as the new, officially updated standard required for global wind industry compliance. While RUK medicals were the previous standard, their guidelines have received no update since first issue In 2013. The OEUK with Chester Step is often accepted but is technically not specific for the Renewables sector.
Updated 2025 Standard:
The EI 3583 standard is the updated, unified standard for 2025 that replaces old RUK requirements. The medicals are very similar and include the requirement for fitness testing in the form of a Chester Step Test.
Accepted Globally:
The new medical certificate is accepted by major wind operators (e.g., Orsted, Siemens Gamesa) and GWO training providers worldwide.
Specific to Wind Industry:
Unlike the OEUK Offshore medical designed for oil and gas, both the old RUK and new EI medicals are specifically tailored to the physical demands of working at heights, in confined spaces, and in offshore wind environments.
Covers Mandatory Requirements:
Both types check for essential fitness components like the blood pressure, hearing and the Chester Step Test.
Same Validity Period: Similar to the RUK medical, the new EI medical certificate is generally valid for 2 years.
If you are new to industry, it is best to book the combined OEUK, RUK and EI 3583 medical as this covers the widest range of possible requirements until the RUK is phased out.
If employed / contracted, please check with your employer if the EI medical is required.
