Renewables / Wind Turbine

Rapid, reliable medicals for Wind turbine workers

Renewables UK Wind Medical is a specialised health assessment designed for individuals working in the wind energy sector, including onshore and offshore wind farms. This medical ensures workers are physically and medically fit to operate in challenging environments, often at heights and in remote locations.

Our assessment follows RenewableUK (RUK) and GWO (Global Wind Organisation) medical fitness standards, including checks on cardiovascular health, lung function, vision, hearing, and musculoskeletal fitness. This helps ensure compliance with industry safety regulations and reduces the risk of health-related incidents in high-risk environments.

Who needs this medical?

This type of medical is required for workers in the Renewable Energies sector, especially wind turbines. This medical ensures that the workers meet the physical and mental health criteria for work in onshore and offshore wind farms, which often involves working at heights, confined spaces, and remote locations.

What is involved in the assessment?

The RUK medical assessment takes approximately 40 minutes and typically involves a detailed medical history review of personal and occupational medical background.

Height and weight (BMI) measurements are taken. The physical examination puts an emphasis on the cardiovascular, respiratory, and musculoskeletal systems.

A Chester step test, used as a measurement of cardiovascular fitness,  Lung Function Test (spirometry), blood pressure, and heart rate measurements, as well as urine test are conducted at every assessment.

Vision (including near and distance) and colour deficiency are assessed. A hearing test is also conducted evaluating the ability to communicate in noisy environments. The skin is assessed for any skin conditions that may affect work.

HAVS Questionnaire and Assessment may be required, for those potentially exposed to hand-arm vibration.
Drug and Alcohol Screening is not part of the examination process, although some employers may require it. If needed, it has to be done separately, prior to your assessment visit.

The RUK medical is valid for two years and must be regularly renewed to ensure continued fitness for work in the renewable energy sector.

What do I need to bring with me?

On the day of your appointment, you need to bring with you a government issued photo ID (a driving licence, passport, or a national ID card). You also need to know the exact job description and the name of your employer.
Please, wear comfortable cloths as you need to perform the Chester step test.

Can bad dental health affect my medical?

Yes. Any current broken teeth, exposed roots or dental infection will require a dental assessment to confirm you are at low risk of needing emergency dental treatment. The dental report is needed before your certificate can be issued.

I have white coat hypertension, can this affect my medical?

If your blood pressure reading is too high at the appointment, it is best to arrange an Ambulatory Blood Pressure reading at your local pharmacy or GP practice.
